Why Using the Wrong Size Air Filter Is a Mistake

Regularly cleaning or replacing HVAC filters extends system lifespan, reduces energy consumption, and prevents costly repairs or replacements, especially for households with pets or health concerns.

The air filters in an HVAC unit are part of a complex heating and air conditioning system that keeps homes comfortable. Most systems have two filters that clean the air flowing to and from the unit. These air filters trap dust, pet dander, contaminants, and particulates before they infiltrate the HVAC system and circulate throughout the air breathed daily.

The system won't function properly—and health may suffer.

All the air inside a home circulates through the HVAC system at least twice per hour. Clean, well-fitting air filters clear the air of dust, bacteria, VOCs, and other harmful contaminants that can make the air unhealthy for the home's inhabitants.

EPA studies have found that air inside the typical American home can be up to 200 percent more contaminated than outside air. One way to keep a family healthy and breathing easy is to ensure regular changes of the system's air filters.

For proper function, air filters must be the correct size for the unit. A poorly fitting filter will not capture these particulates, and as a result, the air quality inside the home can suffer. Additionally, HVAC equipment may not last as long because bacteria and contaminants can build up inside the unit, coating the coils and requiring costly repairs.

The system will wear out faster.

Keeping air filters clean will extend the life of the HVAC system. An unclean air filter will cause the unit to work harder to keep the home cool. Over time, the extra wear and tear on the system will take its toll, requiring repairs or even replacement. Additionally, a dirty air filter will cause the system to use more energy as it works to cool the space, costing more in energy charges.

It is advisable to replace or clean HVAC filters at least once every 30 to 45 days, even more frequently during periods of heavy AC or furnace use, especially with pets. If a family member suffers from a respiratory illness, allergies, or a compromised immune system, consider purchasing a high-quality filter that can clean smaller particulates from the air than a standard air filter.

Sizing Air Filters

The simplest way to determine the size of the air filters needed for a system is by removing the existing filter and checking the side. The dimensions are printed on the cardboard frame of disposable filters. Air filters are sized by length and width. The standard thickness for a filter is one inch. If the system requires a filter that is 10 inches long by 10 inches wide, look for a new filter with the dimensions of "10 x 10 x 1" printed on the label. Ensure that the filter fits snugly enough in the receptacle so that air does not escape around the sides.

For permanent filters, or if there are no filters installed in the system, measuring the filter slot will be necessary. Use a tape measure to find the dimensions, and then purchase a filter that matches the dimensions the system needs.

Maintenance is Important

Ensuring that the HVAC system's air filters fit correctly is part of proper HVAC maintenance. However, the system should also undergo a tune-up at least once per season.
