How to Help Dogs Stay Cool in Hot Weather

Provide shade for dogs outdoors to avoid direct sunlight exposure, as shade can feel significantly cooler, ensuring they have access to water and limiting their time outdoors to prevent overheating.

Pet owners have probably worried about their furry friend's comfort on more than one occasion, especially when it's warm out. It can be hard to tell if a dog is panting from the heat or if they're just catching their breath after a fun time at the park. Since dogs can't always communicate their feelings, helping them stay cool is crucial.

Give them ice

There is a good chance that dogs who have never experienced ice water will love it. Adding ice to the water bowl is an easy way to help them cool down.

If a dog spends a lot of time out in the heat, consider giving them a special treat—an ice lick! Simply take a few of their favorite toys or treats, place them in a large bowl of water, and let them freeze. This can keep them occupied and cool when they're outside.

Cool them down with water

Unlike humans, dogs can only sweat from areas not covered by fur. Cooling them down by applying water to their non-furry areas helps immensely. If there is a plastic kiddie pool available, fill it with water to let the dog play or lie in it until they feel cool and comfortable.

Give them shade

While shade doesn't lower the temperature, it removes direct exposure to sunlight, which can feel 10 to 15 degrees cooler. Ensure that dogs have access to shade when they are outside, leave some water in the shade, and avoid keeping them out for too long.

Know if a dog is at risk for heatstroke

Brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed, hard-breathing dogs) like English Bulldogs, pugs, Frenchies, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus are at the highest risk for heatstroke. If a pet owner is unsure about their dog's risk, contact a vet for advice.

Some dogs enjoy swimming to cool off, while others might need more help. There are many fun ways to help a dog stay cool while outdoors, but sometimes, bringing them back inside where the AC can keep them cool is best.
